Depending on your camera, enable the appropriate options and recompile the kernel if necessary:

Select device(s) as needed
First, fix a problem generating the man page:
sed -i "s/&version;/3.34.0/" docs/reference/cheese{,-docs}.xml
Install Cheese by running the following commands:
mkdir build && cd build && meson --prefix=/usr -Dgtk_doc=false .. && ninja
This package does not have a working testsuite.
Now, as the root
user:
ninja install
